The Frame Shop

Steve and Luca and friends in their frame shop in Figline Valdarno, Florence, Italy…60 cm x 70 cm, oil on panel, done from many lives…July 2012

Fa caldo!! It’s verrry hot!! Not too much painting outdoors…non ho dipinto tanto fuori….after the opening of the exhibition and all that that entails..dopo l’inaugurazone della mostra e tutto quello che ci vuole per promuoverla…..my total being needed a rest..il mio essere totale aveva bisogno di un riposo.  E poi, il caldo è arrivato— and then the heat struck!!  It really hasn’t affected my mind…..non è che ha toccato il mio cervello….or..o???? Anyway..comunque….I decided to write in 2 languages, for better or for worse…ho deciso di scrivere in 2 lingue nel bene e nel male ..ha ha..ha ha…I do live in Italy after all..Io abito in Italia dopo tutto!

I am working on a large painting of my framer’s shop which includes them, of course, this is something I really enjoy doing..people in their workplaces ..  Sto dipingendo un quadro grande della bottega dei miei cornicaii, inclusi naturalmente riratti di loro….è una cosa che mi piace molto fare, cioè,dipingere la gente nel loro ambiente di lavoro.   I am also working on a  sanguine and pastel portrait of a young Dutch man who is currently  here at the Palagina—in piu sto facendo un ritratto in sanguigna e in pastello di un giovane Olandese attualmente alla Palagina. And In the evening when it is cooler, I am working on a large pastel landscape of a meandering road… e in serata, quando fa meno caldo, sto facendo un paesaggio in pastello di una strada in campagna che fa meandri…ed ecco dove vado ora….and that is where I’m headed now..On the road…

Foolish Phish

Silly title! I was thinking about the date and realized that today is April 1, which is April Fools day in the US..also England?..and Pesce d’Aprile in Italy…same kind of thing..practical jokes..but on a serious note..when I first began drawing, painting but mostly drawing here in Florence and following the Annigoni “school”, there existed a beautiful, wonderful, irreplaceable paper that Maestro Annigoni had concocted together with the Cartiera Magnani…it was a paper that had a certain color not white, not ivory, not beige , no yellow tints..it was made I have learned since of a mix of cotton and wool. One could work and work and certain effects of translucent skin tones could be achieved ;it was resistant to rubbing in sanguigna, use of water….anyway, this “Annigoni paper” exists but it is no longer the same.how sad..it is yellowish, and too soft to create certain textures..I have called the factory to no avail…but I do not want to be a fool and so I think I will seek some other alternative. If anyone out there knows of a good one , please let me know!!
